Chapter 19

As the steaming water cascaded down over Kevin Walker’s matted, dirty hair and aching shoulders, he could scarcely believe how good the rejuvenating powers of a hot shower felt. Though his ankles were still bound and he had been re-handcuffed due to being let out of his dungeon, the beautiful feeling of being cleansed was simply sensational. Every now and again, the gnawing angst of being a prisoner popped into his mind but they were thoughts that certainly could wait. Right now he was feeling the first pleasure he had felt in quite a while.

After the brief interaction with his captor he had been led out of what did indeed turn out to be a small basement. Upon ascending the rickety staircase another heavy door opened into a small stone foyer. Walker could tell that various rooms branched out from this area, but his position gave very little clue as to how big or what type of a dwelling he was in.

Periodically, a murmur of voices could be heard from some unseen room. This surprised him not in the least given that he had been taken by at least four or five attackers. Still though, hearing those voices sent a chill down his aching spine. This all had the feel of something very big, the nature of which he could simply not fathom.

But now, temporarily, it was all being washed down the drain, the dirt and grime seemingly melting away like the nauseating sub-consciousness of his journey here. To feel clean was indeed to feel human again.

After a ten minute soak, he heard a pounding on the bathroom door and the booming words: “Enough. Time to come out”. Ali-if that was his real name-at least had the decency to wait outside the door for him to bathe himself. Walker reached his cuffed hands down immediately and turned off the shower. Obedience and politeness had gotten him an odd rapport so far, and he was not about to undo this by taking liberties, no matter how great the hot water felt.

As he towelled himself off, he thought now about this whole crazy situation. The downside of feeling more human is that it seemed to come with more lucid, rational thinking and given the insane nature of his circumstance, he wasn’t sure this was such a good thing. My family. God, how are Rebecca and the kids holding up? They must be so scared. He couldn’t imagine the terror they were assuredly experiencing from seeing him taken from in front of them. It defied logic. One moment they were all happily on vacation and the next he was beaten, drugged and kidnapped by masked men. The wails of his family played now like a broken record in his tortured mind. He felt his eyes welling up with tears and he fought with all his might to contain them from spilling over. Now was far from the occasion to get emotional. No matter how this ended, there would be time for that later.
